Stuck on an Island (Literally) 5218-1807-064

I’ve pretty much neglected this blog for the last couple of months, but now it’s time for a rant.
This is somthing that is pissing me off SO MUCH at the moment, and as far as I can see, I’ve got no way around it.

I’m talking about Uni.

Uni isn’t the thing that’s pissing me off. The thing that’s pissing me off is the UK Uni system. Now as lots of you know, I’m pretty much counting down the days until I can go back to the UK to live, and as such – I want to go to Uni there. Not too much to ask, is it? I mean I *am British*, lived there before, parents are British, entire family lives there; so what’s the big deal?

Well, the big deal is this:

Because I’ve been stuck here for the last decade and a bit (More specifically – Not living in the UK for the past 3 years); I can’t get a government supported place at a UK university (Ie the UK version of HECS). Now if I was ethnic, black or retarded, this wouldn’t be an issue (goddamned Labor goverment); but since I’m not – I am forced to go Full-Fee paying.

So this basically means that instead of paying £2-3,000 per year for a Uni course; I’m looking at £9-14,000.

Now in this day in age, with the $AUD so weak (compared to the £ – it’s strong against the Greenback), that’s effectively paying $24,000 a year for a course, which I should be paying about $8,000. (Which effectively has killed any chance of me going to Uni over there).

How’s that for a ROYAL PAIN IN THE ASS.

In the US I have the same problem (although that doesn’t stem from lack of residency, that’s just plainly because I’m not a citizen of the US – Fair enough); but seriously, I’m a UK national, - so why the hell can’t I get the same support from the goverment as someone who came to the UK on a floating door?

So now I’m stuck. Not stuck for ideas, but stuck here. I can’t do Uni in the US; I can’t do Uni in the UK; and in the EU I have the same problem (By being a UK national, I’m also entitled to live and work anywhere in the EU); and Canada is just whack. Other than those four locations, all I have left is Asia, Africa or South America – Not a chance in hell for either three.

AND, to futher top it off; If I do a Uni course here, and then go do a Post-Grad over in the UK, I have to wait 3 years before I can get government sponsorship; so that pretty much destroys that idea.

Looks like I’m stuck in “Bladdy Oarstraya” for the next 5+ years.

What fun.

  1. Come to RMIT…

I’ve discovered that if you go to Melb or Monash you don’t actually get a degree that will get you a job; cause all employers know you only go to Melb or Monash for beer drinking courses.

So you’ve got beer-drinking courses in the US vs. beer-drinking courses here vs. courses in England that have reputation vs. courses here that give you skills…

    Tough choice…

    Join the army… :P

  2. Have you considered New Zealand :) . Ok now we have all stopped laughing I will be serious for a moment, why don’t you just do uni in Australia, go on exchange for a year and you get the best of both worlds. Have you considered South Africa?, I hear the Bahama’s also have a great reputation as well!. Also can you fix the spelling of my name in the links bar, I have asked you quite a few times :)
